Schine Inn Training Camp®
In 1965, Muhammad Ali trained in Chicopee, Massachusetts, at the Schine Inn for his rematch against Sonny Liston. He set up a gym in a banquet room and followed a rigorous training routine, including five-mile runs in combat boots through Blunt Park in Springfield. Ali’s entourage included trainer Angelo Dundee, cornerman Drew “Bundini” Brown, and sparring partners like future champion Jimmy Ellis.
On May 25 in Lewiston, Maine, Ali knocked Liston out in the first round with what became known as the “phantom punch.” Though the fight had low attendance, it was watched by half a million people on closed-circuit television. After his victory, Ali celebrated at the Schine Inn and later returned to Western Massachusetts in his later years.
