In the basement of Salem Methodist Church was a hidden treasure. A sanctuary for young, tough, and angry youth on the corner of 129th Street and 7th Avenue in New York City.
Gym was funded by the church, the church believed that it required energy to fight sin.
A young kid, Walker Smith Jr would likely be working out, punching the bags, training in the ring – dedicated to becoming a camp someday. He would later become known as Sugar Ray Robinson.
Once Walker Smith Jr (Sugar Ray Robinson) started boxing here they knew he was special and more folks would donate money to keep the gym opened.
