Billy Grupp was an ex-fighter who opened Grupp’s in 1915. Gym was located at 252 W 116th Street.
Billy believed “‘He who hits and runs away – will live to fight another day.”
Sugar Ray Robinson, Jack Dempsey and many other greats trained here.
After World War I, in the heart of Harlem, New York, Billy Grupp opened Grupp’s Gymnasium. It would become known as the preeminent gym in New York City.
Grupp’s gym had everything that the aspiring boxer could ever want to train in back in those days. An open layout and bright light invited in hope and determination on the backs of those who walked through the doors.
With both Sugar Ray Robinson and Jack Dempsey training at Grupp’s, Sugar Ray Robinson called it “Grupp’s College.”
