Cus D’Amato was born in 1908 to an Italian family in a tough Bronx neighborhood. He grew up fighting in the streets. In 1939 at age 22 he opened Gramercy Gym. Cus lived in the gym office alone for years with just a huge boxer dog named “champ,” just waiting for the next champion to come in.

In 1949 Floyd Patterson showed up at age 14 and this was the champion that Cus D’Amato was looking for.
Cus handled careers of Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and several successful boxing trainers including Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney.
Cus D’Amato had a reputation as one of the most forthright men in boxing.
