Pompton Lakes Training Camp*
Joe Louis trained at the Health Farm in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, during the 1930s and 1940s, considering it his “lucky camp.” He discovered the borough through Dr. Joseph Bier, a specialist in treating “cauliflower ears,” and began training at the doctor’s facility. Despite resistance to a Black boxer and his team training there, Dr. Bier stood firm in his support.
Louis’ training sessions attracted massive crowds, sometimes exceeding 9,000 spectators, with people watching from trees, fences, and rooftops. He wore white trunks, white socks, a white tank top, and black boxing shoes during training.
Like other boxing training camps, Louis’ sessions lasted 6–8 weeks before a fight, helping him cut weight, improve conditioning, and spar with partners resembling his opponents.
