Newman’s Gym®
Newman’s Gym, established in 1924 at the Cadillac Hotel, was one of the oldest professional boxing facilities in the U.S. and the only one in San Francisco. Legendary fighters like Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis trained there. Co-owner Billy Newman, known for his generosity, supported struggling fighters. The gym was still active when the Cadillac Hotel became a city landmark in 1984. After Newman’s death that year, Don Stewart took over, keeping it open until its closure in 1992.
