Long Pond Inn Training Camp®*
Joe Murchio established a boxing training camp in Greenwood Lake, New York, in 1939, which became a renowned destination for elite fighters, including Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Floyd Patterson. The camp attracted local attention as residents sought autographs and photos with the famous boxers, integrating the sport into the community.
Murchio’s camp was notable for its inclusivity, helping to break boxing’s racial barriers. Joe Louis, a major figure in sports integration, trained there and even performed a heroic rescue in 1941 when he saved a couple from drowning in the lake.
The camp was later sold to Eddie McDonald and renamed “The Long Pond,” continuing to host top fighters like Rocky Graziano and Rocky Marciano. The Long Pond Inn, which housed the camp, became a hub for both boxing and entertainment, featuring live music performances, including The Four Seasons. However, the building was lost to a fire in 1971.
Despite its destruction, Greenwood Lake remained a historic training ground for boxing legends, and its legacy continues to be honored in the sport’s history.
