Hoover Street Gym®*
The Hoover Street Gym, located at 78th & Hoover in South Los Angeles, was a small but significant boxing gym that played a crucial role in shaping numerous fighters from the 1940s to the 1970s. Known for its gritty, no-nonsense atmosphere, the gym became a training ground for both up-and-coming and established boxers.
One of the most notable figures to train there was Joe Frazier, who worked under the legendary trainer Eddie Futch. Frazier honed his skills at Hoover Street Gym before making a name for himself at the Olympic Auditorium, where he fought in the early stages of his career on his way to becoming the Heavyweight Champion of the World.
The gym was part of a larger boxing culture in Los Angeles that included other iconic venues like the Main Street Gym and the Olympic Auditorium. It contributed to the development of many fighters who would go on to compete at national and international levels. Though it was not as widely known as some of the larger gyms, its impact on boxing history remains significant.
