Grace Community Center Gym®*
Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, began his boxing journey in Louisville, Kentucky. At 12, after reporting a stolen bicycle to police officer and boxing coach Joe E. Martin, Ali expressed a desire to “whup” the thief. Martin offered to teach him boxing, guiding his early career and accompanying him to the 1960 Rome Olympics, where Ali won a gold medal.
In addition to training at Martin’s integrated Columbia Gym, Ali sought advanced techniques from Fred Stoner at the Grace Community Center Gym, also known as the Presbyterian Community Center, in Louisville’s Smoketown neighborhood. Stoner, the center’s club director, was instrumental in refining Ali’s skills, with Ali crediting him for teaching him “all I know.” Stoner also trained other notable boxers, including Jimmy Ellis and Rudell Stitch.
The Grace Community Center, established in 1898 as the Presbyterian Colored Mission, played a significant role in the community, offering various recreational activities. The original building, constructed in 1929, underwent changes over the years, merging with another center in 1965 to become the Presbyterian Community Center. After relocating in 2001 and closing in 2013, the historic structure was renovated and now provides affordable housing and houses the Smoketown Family Community Wellness Center, offering pediatric services and family programs.
A historical marker at the site commemorates its significance, highlighting Ali’s training under Stoner and Stoner’s contributions to boxing and the community.
