De Forest Training Camp
Jimmy DeForest was a prominent boxing trainer and promoter in the early 20th century. He initially performed in the circus before transitioning to amateur boxing and later became a well-respected trainer. He established the DeForest Boxing Training Camp in West Allenhurst, New Jersey, on Deal Beach Avenue (now Corlies Avenue), operating it from 1900 to 1930.
DeForest trained many legendary fighters, including Jack Dempsey, Stanley Ketchel, James J. Jeffries, Joe Gans, George Dixon, Joe Walcott, Kid McCoy, Tommy Ryan, Jack Sharkey, and Luis Angel Firpo. His expertise in conditioning and strategy significantly contributed to Dempsey’s victory over Jess Willard in 1919. DeForest was also involved in promoting major fights, such as the Harry Greb vs. Mickey Walker bout.
