Grupp's Gym

After World War I, in the heart of Harlem, New York, Billy Grupp opened Grupp’s Gymnasium. It would become known as the preeminent gym in New York City.

Grupp’s gym had everything that the aspiring boxer could ever want to train in back in those days. An open layout and bright light invited in hope and determination on the backs of those who walked through the doors.

With both Sugar Ray Robinson and Jack Dempsey training at Grupp’s, Sugar Ray Robinson called it “Grupp’s College.”
